- <p> Hillary's hat, Tipper's gown--what about the Queen of
- Soul's crown? Well, it's intact all right, but it did take a
- beating. Fur foes didn't take well to ARETHA FRANKLIN's
- conspicuous Inaugural companion: a drapey, dramatic Russian
- sable. ALEC BALDWIN dissed it as a disappointment; rocker
- Chrissie Hynde called it a bad career move. Thankfully, though,
- the oh-so-offended had a place to vent: a bash hosted by People
- for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. There, Baldwin, KIM
- BASINGER, k.d. lang and other glowworm-loving glitterati
- denounced pricey pelts, sucked down a meal featuring mock
- spareribs and mung-bean sprouts, and chatted with nude waiters
- and waitresses wearing aprons that read, I'D RATHER GO NAKED
- THAN WEAR FUR!--a statement suggesting that somewhere in the
- restaurant kingdom there are workers being cruelly forced to bus
- tables in mink. Good thing a fur-clad Aretha was flouncing
- around a gala stage a safe distance from the shindig--had she
- got too close, she might have been egged. Sorry, tofued.
